July 19, 2021 - Weird Apartment Names

Today we're talking about weird apartment/building names in Japan and the usage of fake English in general. When I think about that, I remember noticing a lot of strange English in Japan, but weirdly enough, I can't recall what was weird about it - no names, all is wiped out of my memory. Though the video we watched seem funny at first, I can't help but sense a hint of mockery in it. Yes, it would make sense to check the meaning of the word before registering it as a building name, but I guess in some way the weird word usage is justified.

I'm convinced this has a connection with the property registry system. As I see it (though I'm not sure and too lazy to do research), registering a building complex has to be somewhat similar to registering a company name, product name or patent - like if you were to register your artist name in ISNI (The International Standard Name Identifier). This means that one name can be only registered in the system once unless dismissed by the owner. This brings us to the point that people and companies simply run out of ideas on how to name the buildings or, in general, their businesses and products - and all we know next - weird English is everywhere, which I personally don't really mind.
