June 23, 2021 My favourite website besides YouTube, Twitch and Twitter?
Let's talk about the news, shall we? Do you like to follow what's happening in the world? I personally love following the news, whether it'd be internet drama between YouTubers or political issues in Brunei. As we like to say in my country "Forewarned is forearmed" - so I'm getting my warnings before they will get to me.
One of my favourite sites to use is Bloomberg. It's a huge news portal with a wide spectre of columns and topics and various branches: there are Bloomberg US, Asia, Africa, Middle East and even Bloomberg Japan. I personally have a reduced price student subscription for the European edition, but this doesn't prevent me from switching amongst other editions if I like.
I started using this website about a year ago to keep the track of news regarding COVID-19 and prices on the stock market. It's a shame to admit it, but I do not trust news sources in my country. I do believe that statistics about COVID is wronged and unreliable, so I'd rather put my trust and money in an overseas source to get a bigger picture of current events. As upsetting as it is, Russia has been having issues with freedom of speech for a long time now, and watching one of favourite news site in Russia fall under accusations of international espionage I cannot trust those sources that stand untouched - prove me wrong, but I cannot help it but have my suspicions of whether they're paying to stay afloat or paid to write what they write. So I started to look the alternatives overseas.
I did a little research and soon found out that Washington Post and The Guardian, as much as I wanted to believe it, did not match my expectations, since they seem to be more focused on events happening within their countries rather than international news. I needed something broad, something that would cover as much as possible to give me an overview on everything - what's up on the Chinese stock market and how Corona influenced the economic situation there, is it true that Italy has the highest death rate due to COVID? And since Bloomberg gives it all not only in writing, but video format too - after a trial period it eventually became my first choice.
This is amazing. I too have trouble finding international news sometimes. I had to ump from one website to another if I want to find such news. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYes, I do this a lot too, even thoug I have my Bloomberg subscription. I like to check whether the information matches other sourses and sometimes it'd getting me really upset if there's a countradiction.
DeleteThat's good to hear your opinion! I hate a lot of the news media too. Too much fake news! But at least with the internet, we can find the sites that can provide what we are looking for, assuming we still have a free society. I have heard other sayings in Russian such as In Pravda, there is no news
ReplyDeleteIn Izvestya there is no truth. When it comes to big news sites though I always say trust but verify.
Trust but verify should be a new mantra of 21st century - specially with the amounts of clickbaity fake news we're dealing with nowadays.
DeleteHere here!
Deletethat sounds so cool! I also find news to spread like wild fire but lacking any verified proof!
ReplyDeleteNews portals are being overcompetitive over the challenge to deliver the news first, because winning this race means the loads of money. As sad as it is, money keep their business thriving more than credibility does, so it's dissapointing to admit that I I partially understand where they're coming from, thriving for profits.
